Combine the auxiliary verb いる with a て form verb to form the ~ている pattern. ている verbs are ongoing actions. The ている form of verbs in Japanese is similar to the present continuous ("ing") form of verbs in English.
E.g. 食べる → 食べて → 食べている "eating"
ている verbs can be divided into the following categories: actions that are currently ongoing, actions that have been happening for some time, or ongoing habits/customs.
