よ
Sentence ender
About
よ is one of the most common sentence-enders in Japanese. It is considered "spoken" language and has many different uses.
In general, よ is used to both soften a declarative statement and to sound informative. よ is most commonly used in combination with the following types of statements:
-
Statements that provide new information to the listener
-
Statements that give permission to the listener
-
Statements that disagree with something that was previously said
Adding よ to these types of statements makes them sound less declarative, and is therefore extremely commonly used in casual, as well as polite speech, to avoid sounding too assertive.
