~後で/に

After/later

N5

~後で/に

After/later

About

The noun あと can be used to indicate that an action happens "after" another. To do this, we attach it directly to a casual past verb or to a noun using the の particle.

E.g. べたあと
"after (someone) had eaten"
E.g. ランチのあと
”after lunch"

あと can be followed by the に particle or the で particle. ~あとに links two actions more closely in time, while ~あとで links them more loosely (as in, the second action may not happen right away).

あと may also directly attach to a time noun to express "X time from now" or "in X amount of time". In this case, its reading usually changes to .

E.g. 3時間さんじかん
"Three hours from now."
