〜がり

About

The 連用形れんようけい (continuative form) of がる, 「がり」, can attach to an い-adjective, or a たい form verb to turn it into a noun. These adjective-nouns are used to describe one's personality or character traits.

Since they describe personality, personality descriptors made using がり tend to involve adjectives of emotion (e.g. 恥はずかしい "shy") or state (e.g. 寒さむい "cold").

To attach がり to an い-adjective, simply remove the final い:

寒さむい "cold" → 寒さむい → 寒さむがり "a person who gets cold easily"

〜がり is also often appended by 屋や, which can add either a cute or mean/self-deprecating nuance, depending on the context.

〜がり can be used to talk about both the personalities of others, and oneself.
