Welcome to your second ~がる lesson! This is sort of a "part two", if you will, where we'll be combining がる with adjectives. Ready, get set, aaand grammar!
い-adjective (い)がる
な-adjectiveがる
Example:
→ 海を怖がっている。
”They're scared of the ocean.”
Okay first things first: since we used がる to specifically express third-person wants and desires in our last lesson, we'll have to reset our understanding of how がる works a bit.
When we were attaching がる to たい in the previous lesson, we were essentially already attaching it to an い-adjective. I say "essentially", because たい is not technically classified as an い-adjective, but rather an auxiliary adjective (助動詞). Also I didn't mention it before, but when we did this, we were actually turning たい into a verb! This is even more obvious with the 「欲しい + がる」 pattern. 欲しがる turns the い-adjective 欲しい, into a verb!
