〜られる/える
Potential form
About
The potential form of a verb can be formed using the auxiliary verb られる, which indicates potential, or that something is possible.
For ichidan verbs, simply add られる to the stem form of a given verb:
Verb | Verb stem | Potential Form |
---|---|---|
食べる | 食べ | 食べられる |
寝る | 寝 | 寝られる |
起きる | 起き | 起きられる |
It's also common to remove the ら from られる, especially in spoken Japanese. This is called the ら抜き言葉 (ら-less word) version of the potential form.
Verb | Potential Form (ら抜き) |
---|---|
食べる | 食べれる |
寝る | 寝れる |
起きる | 起きれる |
For godan verbs, turn the final kana into its corresponding hiragana column /え/ sound, and add る.
Verb | Change to /え/ sound | Potential Form |
---|---|---|
飲む | 飲め | 飲める |
買う | 買え | 買える |
泳ぐ | 泳げ | 泳げる |
立つ | 立て | 立てる |
する and 来る are exceptions:
Verb | Potential Form |
---|---|
する | できる |
来る | 来られる |
Potential form verbs can be used to express abilities (including innate abilities) and possibilities.
E.g. 食べる ("to eat") > 食べられる ("to be able to eat/something is edible")
