Not only X, but also Y

N3

Not only X, but also Y

About

〜ばかりで(は)なく is a combination of the particle ばかり, and で(は)なく, the continuative form of で(は)ない.

〜ばかりで(は)なく is a more stiff/formal version of 〜だけでな, and means "not only X, but also Y".

E.g. "Not only is entry free on holidays, but you can also receive a unique sticker."

The addition of は to form 「〜ばかりではなく」 is also possible, with は putting more emphasis on what follows.

E.g. "Not only was Ms. Kondo late, but I hear she also forgot her homework. "

〜ばかりじゃなく can be used in more casual scenarios.

E.g. "Not only did Tanaka learn Italian in Italy, but she also found a boyfriend."

〜ばかりでなくて and 〜ばかりじゃなくて are also possible and sound more like spoken Japanese.

E.g. "Not only did my senpai pay for (my meal), but they also paid for my taxi. "
