～一方だ

About

〜一方いっぽうだ (lit. "one direction") can attach to any dictionary form verb, and means that "X is getting more and more Y", or that "X keeps happening".

🥨 〜一方いっぽうだ can only be used in conjunction with verbs that express some form of a change in state/degree. (E.g. 増ふえる、上あがる、下さがる、減へる、etc.)

E.g. この町まちの人口じんこうは増ふえる一方いっぽうだ。 "This town's population continues to grow."

だ can be used in its 連用形れんようけい ("conjunctive form") to form 「〜一方いっぽうで」 which can then attach to some following information.

E.g. ガソリンの値段ねだんが毎月まいつき上あがる一方いっぽうで、困こまっています。 "I'm having a hard time because the price of gas continues to rise each month."

Although it is not a strict rule, 一方いっぽうだ tends to be used in negative contexts, rather than positive ones.
