X continues to Y

N3

~一方だ

X continues to Y

About

一方いっぽうだ (lit. "one direction") can attach to any dictionary form verb, and means that "X is getting more and more Y", or that "X keeps happening".

🥨 〜一方いっぽうだ can only be used in conjunction with verbs that express some form of a change in state/degree. (E.g. える、がる、がる、る、etc.)

E.g. このまち人口じんこうえる一方いっぽう。 "This town's population continues to grow."

だ can be used in its 連用形れんようけい ("conjunctive form") to form 「〜一方いっぽうで」 which can then attach to some following information.

E.g. ガソリンの値段ねだん毎月まいつきがる一方いっぽうこまっています。 "I'm having a hard time because the price of gas continues to rise each month."

Although it is not a strict rule, 一方いっぽうだ tends to be used in negative contexts, rather than positive ones.
