~一方だ
X continues to Y
About
〜一方だ (lit. "one direction") can attach to any dictionary form verb, and means that "X is getting more and more Y", or that "X keeps happening".
🥨 〜一方だ can only be used in conjunction with verbs that express some form of a change in state/degree. (E.g. 増える、上がる、下がる、減る、etc.)
E.g. この町の人口は増える一方だ。 "This town's population continues to grow."
だ can be used in its 連用形 ("conjunctive form") to form 「〜一方で」 which can then attach to some following information.
E.g. ガソリンの値段が毎月上がる一方で、困っています。 "I'm having a hard time because the price of gas continues to rise each month."
Although it is not a strict rule, 一方だ tends to be used in negative contexts, rather than positive ones.
