About
~かける can be used to form compound verbs, indicating that an action is "in progress" or was "about to happen".
E.g. この飲みかけのコーヒーは誰の? "Whose half drunk coffee is this?"
~かける means that an action "nearly happened" or was "about to happen" if the verb it attaches to is instantaneous (e.g. 落ちる; ぶつかる).
E.g. びっくりしてピザを落としかけた。 "I got startled and nearly dropped the pizza."
