~として
As a...
About
として is a combination of the と particle with the て form of する, and is used in combination with nouns to make "As a (noun)..." statements. として's main function is to establish a frame of reference for the rest of the sentence.
E.g. マイクは友達としてあまり良い人ではない。 "As a friend, Mike isn't a very good person."
として can also be used to describe the quality of something, someone's position, the way something is used, or one's feelings/actions from "X" standpoint.
E.g. 私は英語の教師として、日本で働いています。 "I'm working in Japan as an English teacher."
として can be paired with the は or の particles, or attached directly to another noun.
E.g. マイクは友達としては良い人ではない。 "As a friend, Mike isn't a good person."
E.g. これはオーナーとしての方針だ。 "This is my policy as the owner."
Using は in combination with として provides a sense of contrast (e.g. "As a friend Mike isn't a good person, (but as something else...)").
