～は別として

About

The 「～は別べつとして」 pattern means "Setting X aside" or "Aside from...", and can attach to any noun or phrase that the speaker wants to "set aside".

E.g. 天気てんきは別べつとして、最高さいこうの週末しゅうまつだった。 "Putting the weather aside, it was an awesome weekend."

～は別べつとして is often preceded by other grammar such as ～か・～かどうか, or sometimes by the 「(X, Y)は別べつとして......」pattern, wherein X and Y are antonyms (i.e. opposites).

E.g. 勝かつかどうかは別べつとして、楽たのしむことが大事だいじだ。 "Putting aside whether or not you'll win, it's important to have fun."

E.g. 面白おもしろい、面白おもしろくないは別べつとして、始はじめたことを最後さいごまでやるのが大切たいせつだよ。 "Putting aside whether it's interesting or not, it's important to finish what you started."
