～わけがない

About

「わけがない」 is a combination of 「わけ」 ("reason; situation; circumstance; conclusion (from reasoning)"), and the standard ～がない pattern for expressing that something does not exist.

わけがない can be used with verbs and い-adjectives (which attach directly), as well as nouns (which attach using の/な/である) and な-adjectives (which attach using な/である).

The わけがない pattern is used to create strong statements of denial, often translating to "there's no way that X".

E.g. 寝ねてばかりいて、合格ごうかくできるわけがないよ。 "All they do is sleep, there's no way they can pass (the test)."

E.g. あんなにかっこいい人ひとがモテないわけがないよ。"There's no way someone that cool isn't popular."

In spoken contexts, が may be dropped to form 「わけない」.

E.g. こんなにたくさんの仕事しごと、今日中きょうじゅうに終おわるわけない。 "There's no way I can finish this much work within the day."

Compared to the similar grammar point 「～はずがない」, ～わけがない statements sound stronger, and do not have to be based on evidence or reason.
