〜あげく

After... in the end/to end up/after all

About

〜あげくattaches to past casual verbs and nouns using の, and is used to express that a given action resulted in an undesirable outcome. The action in question should involve effort, time, and/or struggle, and not be a one-time or momentary action.

〜あげく is used when the speaker wants to express that "Even though X, it ended up (unfortunately) being Y", with あげく adding a regretful tone.

〜あげく is best translated as "after", with "in the end" often added in the second clause.

E.g. 散々さんざんみちまよったあげく、そのままかえってしまった。 "After getting very lost, they ended up just going home."

E.g. おみせで1時間じかんまよったあげく結局けっきょくなにわなかった。 "After an hour of waffling in the store, (I) didn't end up buying anything."

E.g. 三日間みっかかんおよ議論ぎろんあげくなにめることができなかった。 "After an argument that spanned three days, in the end (they) weren't able to decide anything."

〜あげく is most commonly used in casual spoken scenarios, and occasionally in polite spoken scenarios.
