N3

General fact/advice/exclamation/nostalgia

About

When it comes at the end of a sentence, the ~ものだ (or ~ものです) pattern has four possible usages: Expressing general facts, giving advice based on common sense/custom, exclamatory statements, and nostalgic statements.

E.g. "Cats sleep a lot."

E.g. "When you're sick, you shouldn't go to work."

E.g. "Time passes so very quickly."

E.g. "Back in the day, children used to swim in this river."

In spoken Japanese, もの often becomes もん.

E.g. "I really want Mike to eat that ramen."
