～ないことには～ない

The ～ないことには～ない pattern is used to express that "if X condition isn't met, Y result can't be achieved".

～ないことには can be translated as "without...; unless..." in English.

～ないことには may attach to negative verbs/い-adjectives, or な-adjectives/nouns with でない.

The second clause of a ～ないことには statement should contain a negative (～ない) verb.

E.g. 友達ともだちに相談そうだんしてみないことには分わからない。 "I won't know unless I consult with my friend."

E.g. バターが冷つめたくないことには、上手うまく作つくれない。 "Unless the butter is cold, I won't be able to make it well."
