〜をめぐって

About

Using the verb 巡めぐる ("to go around") as its base, the 〜をめぐって pattern is used to describe that two or more parties are in conflict regarding a given topic.

Because it indicates conflict, 〜をめぐって is most commonly followed by verbs such as 「話はなし合あう」・「議論ぎろんする」・「争あらそう」・etc.

〜をめぐって attaches to nouns, or to embedded questions (〜か).

E.g. 祖父そふの遺産いさんをめぐって、家族かぞくで話はなし合あいが毎日まいにちされている。 "The family is having daily discussions concerning their grandfather's inheritence."

E.g. ブラックホールの仕組しくみをめぐって、意見いけんが分わかれている。 "Opinions are divided regarding the workings of black holes."

E.g. どのピザを注文ちゅうもんするかをめぐって、マイク達たちが口論こうろんをしている。 "Mike and his (friends) are arguing over which pizza they should order."

〜をめぐって is formal in tone, and is most commonly used in the news.

〜をめぐって can be written as 〜をめぐり in written contexts.

〜をめぐる and 〜をめぐっての can be used to connect two nouns.

E.g. 土地とちをめぐっての争あらそいは昔むかしからずっとある。 "Conflicts over land have been around for ages."
