ではない, often translated as "is not", is a combination of the copula 「では」and the い-adjective ない. In casual speech, では is contracted to 「じゃ」

ではない attaches to a noun or な-adjective and turns it negative. Compared to the casual negator じゃない, ではない is more formal. ではない can be made more polite by either adding です or by conjugating the final ない into ありません. ではありません is slightly more polite than ではないです.

Since the final ない of ではない is an い-adjective, we can turn ではない into the past tense by conjugating it to ではなかった. This conjugation can also be made polite by adding です.
