The ます, or polite form, is a verb conjugation that combines a verb's stem form with the auxiliary verb ます. ます form verbs indicate polite speech, especially when used at the end of a sentence.

ませんでした combines the negative ます form (ません) with でした, the polite past tense marker to indicate the negative past tense ("did not...").

Just as with the present tense, ませんでした attaches directly to a verb stem:
