N3

とすれば

If it were the case that/assuming

About

~とすれば is a combination of the と quotation marker, and the ば (conditional) form of する.

~とすれば can be used to make logical "If X, then Y" statements, but differently from ~とすると, the first half of the statement is hypothetical. ~とすれば statements can also involve the speaker's opinion or subjective statements.

E.g. 時給じきゅう2000えんで8時間じかんはたらとすれば1日いちにちで16000えんもらえる。 "If you were to work eight hours at 2000 yen an hour, you could get 16,000 yen in one day."

とすれば can also come at the start of a sentence, and refers back to some previous info.

E.g. とすれば、このシナモンロールにはどくはいっているかもしれない。 "If that were the case, there might be poison in this cinnamon roll."
