〜にしては
Considering/for X...
About
The ~にしては pattern expresses that something is "Considering X, (unexpectedly) Y", or "For X, (something) is Y", wherein 「にしては」 functions in a similar way to "considering/for" in English.
〜にしては is a combination of the に particle, the て form of する, and the は particle, which all come together to frame our statement on the reference of what にしては attaches to.
〜にしては attaches to casual form verbs and nouns.
E.g. 自分で塗ったにしては上手にできたと思う。 "Considering you painted (it) by yourself, I think it's well-done."
E.g. 全然勉強しなかったにしては、いい点が取れたと思う。 "Considering I didn't study at all, I think I got a good grade."
E.g. 製作費がかかっているにしては、あまり人気のない映画でしたね。 "Considering the production cost, it wasn't a very popular movie, was it?"
〜にしては should not be used with unspecific amounts, such as "age" or "price" (although わりに may be used here instead).
E.g.
年齢にしてはおとなしい。 ❌
12歳にしてはおとなしい。 ⭕
"Considering (they're) 12 years old, they're mature."
