ます
Polite form: present tense affirmative
About
The ます, or polite form, is a verb conjugation that combines a verb's stem form with the auxiliary verb ます. ます form verbs indicate polite speech, especially when used at the end of a sentence.
The formula for creating ます form verbs, is to add ます to the stem form of a verb. To create the stem form of an ichidan verb, simply remove the final る. To create the stem form of a godan verb, turn its final /u/ sound kana into an /i/ sound kana (e.g. のむ > のみ). The verbs する and くる are irregular and have stem forms し and き.
Once you have the stem form of your verb, it's as simple as adding ます:
Dictionary form → | Stem form → | ます form (Polite form) |
---|---|---|
食べる | 食べ | 食べます |
飲む | 飲み | 飲みます |
する | し | します |
くる | き | きます |
Other verb forms such as the continuative (ている), potential (られる), and causative (させる) can also be conjugated into ます form.
