切る・上がる・通す: “Finishing ○○”

adept #46
~ 5 Minutes

Introduction

Hello, and welcome! In this lesson, we'll be springboarding off of our analysis of む, and creating three new types of compound verbs.

So, I hope you like verbs, and... compounding.

る: To the very end!!!

構成こうせい

  • b

    Stem form verb
    Example:
    → これ全部ぜんぶれないよ!
”I can't finish drinking all of this!”

All three compound verbs we'll be looking at today have to do with "finishing" a given action, but they all express this in slightly different ways...

We'll start things off with ~る.

When we attach る to a verb stem, we express that said verb is done "completely", or alternatively, we emphasize a given state. Not every verb is る-able, but common compounds use verbs such as べる, む, く, る and やる.
