About
ほうが may be pulled apart from the ~より~ほうが to be used as a standalone "than" or "more than". As in the ~より~ほうが structure, the option that precedes ほうが remains the preferable or greater option.
When using ほうが on its own, the less preferable or lesser option that attaches to より is simply omitted:
E.g.
これのほうが好きだ。
"I like this one more (than the omitted alternative)."
