Surprises, astonishment and deep emotion ("How X; What Y")

About

~ことだ can be used at the end of a sentence to express the speaker's strong emotion and/or emphasize the verb or adjective that comes before it.

We can approximate ~ことだ at the end of a sentence with "How; What a...; So..." in English.

~ことだ can attach to a past casual verb, a negative casual verb, or a casual form い-adjective, or a な-adjective with な attached.

E.g. 大雨おおあめのせいで新幹線しんかんせんまっている。こまったことだ。 "The bullet train isn't running due to heavy rain. How troublesome."

E.g. きなバンドのコンサートのチケットが3ねんぶりにたった。うれしいことだ。 "I won tickets to the concert of a band I like for the first time in three years. I am so very happy."

E.g. このみちだけ通行止つうこうどめになっていなかった。本当ほんとうにラッキーなことだ。 "Only this road wasn't closed. How very lucky."

This usage of ~ことだ is literary in tone.
