We can form the casual negative past tense of a verb, by replacing the final ない of a verb's present negative form with なかった.

Remember that the final ない of a negative verb is an い-adjective, and therefore conjugates into the past as such.

~なかった constructions can be made polite by adding です. Be careful to not accidentally double up on past tense by adding でした instead.
